What Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

SEO Tips

Ever since the birth of the internet in the early 90s, users have turned to search engines to find information on anything from recipes, baby names find long lost relatives, work to playing game. Of course I don’t need to tell you that this list is actually never ending and my suggestions do not even begin to scratch the surface of what users used it for then or now. As website owners and businesses began to find way to monetize their websites came the opportunity for web developers and site owners to find ways to appear at the top of the listings on the search engine results page (SERP).

Along came Search Engine Optimization (SEO), the practice of optimizing your online presence so it appears higher on the SERP for the keywords you want to use for people to find you under. SEO became particularly important when statistics showed that an overwhelming number of searchers never even look past the first page of search results. Same as it was then is true today, but those performing the searches are becoming more and more selective, where the overwhelming majority of us only select listings that are in the top 3 positions.

As search savvy geeks have figured out ways to insure their keywords are found at the top of each of the three big search engines, the search engines alter the way they display their results. Therefore the strategies for SEO have changed significantly over the years, and will only continue to change as the 3 major search engines (Google, Yahoo, and Bing) alter their respective search algorithms. Still, as a website owner there are things you must always do in order to ensure higher placement on the SERP.

Below is a list of SEO tips to consider or do to insure you stay important and relevant in the eyes of the “Big Three”
