14 Tips For Become a More Efficient SEO Professional

If you’re at work, you know there are things that you could be doing right now to improve your website’s SEO. Chances are you probably have a social network open in another browser tab right now as you're reading this, and you've probably checked your email at some point in the last 10 minutes.
How much work have you actually done in the last hour? The last few days? This month?
Would you have expected more from that time if you had been paying someone by the hour to do your job? Just how productive are you?
In today’s tough economy, SEO professionals who constantly try to boost their productivity are going to go far. The "optimization" in SEO implies that there is always something more which can be done to improve organic search visibility, so the faster and smarter you can work, the better results get and happier your stakeholders will be.
Become a More Efficient SEO Professional

However, most SEO professionals live on the web, where distractions are myriad and something new crops up almost every minute. How do you improve productivity in the face of so many things to do? Even more importantly, how do you stop a slow slide into idleness and unproductivity?
In the past I found myself slacking off at work and I had to confront myself with the truth that my productivity level and low attention span was something I couldn't afford to ignore.
The following ideas are all tactics I have tried and tested in the past 12 months to help me boost my output. I’m proud to say that at a recent appraisal I was commended for how I had boosted my productivity in 2012, so some of them must be decent ideas!

Stay Focused With Helpful Software and Browser Extensions

A good place to start is by installing useful software and browser extensions.

1. Stayfocusd

Browser extension Stay focused allows you to create a blacklist of websites you know kill your productivity and sets an amount of time you can spend on them each weekday. It also includes sites you visit from your blacklist (good if you’re a reddit addict) and can suggest sites you might want to add to your blacklist based on behavior.
It's also fiendishly difficult to change Stayfocused's settings once installed, so it’s unlikely you will go back to your old ways!

2. Quick Login for Google Accounts

Do you have multiple logins for personal and professional Google Accounts? I do and the Quick Login for Google Accounts extension is an absolute godsend!
Quickly switch between up to 10 Google accounts and never forget a password again. Working in an agency, I reckon this saves me at least an hour a week.

3. WriteMonkey

WriteMonkey is a word processor with a totally stripped back user experience that can help with longer consultancy documents or blog posts. This boils the writing process down to just me and my words and I can get through the writing stage of producing a document much faster.

4. Pocket

It’s important to stay up to date when you work in search and every SEO should be spending some time each day learning or keeping up with industry news. However, all that reading can be a real killer when it comes to getting work done.
Pocket is a useful tool that allows you to easily store interesting articles, videos, or snippets of text in an accessible place for consumption at a more appropriate time (e.g., during your commute or while you’re sitting on the sofa at home).

5. Timer

Use timers to build your concentration span. Timer is a good example.
If you really struggle to concentrate on a piece of work, start off by trying to focus on it for just 10 minutes of your time then build that time up and up. If this works for you then you should investigate the Pomodoro technique further (see tip 12).

Increase Your Excel and PowerPoint Productivity

Most SEO professionals will spend time in Microsoft Office. If you can get things done faster here, then you can start to outpace your colleagues.

6. Increase Productivity in Excel

  • If you’re editing a lot of data you might need to view how changes in one area make a difference somewhere off-screen, perhaps in another worksheet tab. Moving back and forth takes time, so a great feature is a small Watch Window that can show the area of the workbook your changes are affecting. Highlight the cells you want to watch. Then click Formulas > Watch Window > Add Watch. Simply return to the area of your worksheet that you're editing and the Watch Window will hover in the corner as you work.
  • I quite often need to format several worksheet exactly the same way. Excel's grouped worksheets feature makes this easy: Ctrl-click the tabs that you want to group together, and the grouped tabs turn white. While sheets are grouped, anything you enter in one sheet also gets entered into the others.
  • Hold Alt+I+C to insert column left – this shortcut saves so much time!

7. Increase Productivity in Powerpoint

  • Using the clipboard pane saves endless cycling between slides copying and pasting various objects as it can store 24 items – useful for when you are constructing slides that "build" or you are using a range of icons to represent characters in your presentation’s story arc.
  • Highlight multiple text items and use shift+f3 to toggle between various capitalization options – loads easier than changing individual letters manually – something I see happening all the time and it drives me nuts!
  • Ctrl+D duplicates an object – stop using ctrl+c, ctrl+v.

Change Begins With You

If procrastination is a problem though, fancy shortcuts and browser extensions aren’t going to make a long-term improvement to your productivity levels. Unfortunately, you're going to have to make a real effort to change yourself and your working habits. I know, because this was where I was 12 months ago.

8. Music

Some people find that setting suitable music to match the task you are working on leads to productivity gains. Some people find it easier to work with classical or jazz music playing. This is known as the Mozart effect, although its effectiveness has been questioned.

9. Create Dead Time

Another great lifestyle tip is to get rid of variables within your life: choices which are redundant and simply create dead time. I love this approach even though it involves acknowledging when dead time occurs in your life (and for me there was a shocking amount).
Stuff like:
  • Buying every day essentials at a store is dead time (set up consistent repeat grocery deliveries using online shopping tools).
  • Time spent waiting for spreadsheet downloads is dead time (use APIs to bring the data directly into Excel).
  • Time spent topping your subway/bus card is dead time (set it up to refill automatically).
When you realize that for all of these problems there is a quicker automated solution and you make the small, one-time effort to implement it, you free up lots of time in the future. An additional benefit is that this technique focuses your creativity on the times where it could really add value.

10. Limit Your Email Time

A huge timesaver for me has been changing to a "surgery hours" model for email; this means only checking and responding to email three times each day. This allows you to dedicate larger blocks of time to concentrating on specific tasks.
Unscheduled interruptions do happen, and some initial frustration will arise with colleagues, but after explaining the system and demonstrating that it allows you to get more done, people shouldn’t mind. An added bonus is that people will come and talk to you directly when something is urgent rather than emailing; in almost all cases this leads to quicker reconciliation.

11. Benefits vs. Time: Prioritizing Tasks

In order to better plan your week more effectively, take your to-do list and plot tasks on a benefit (most impact on success to least impact) vs. time to implementation axis. This allows you to visualize which of your tasks will bring most benefit in the shortest time.
One example could be to prioritize emailing a client a mini-success story about a weekly performance improvement before completing the whole weekly report, a task which will take longer and in which your success story might be buried.

12. The Pomodoro Technique

If you suffer with low productivity or a poor ability to plan your day the Pomodoro technique can make a real difference.. Pomodoro Technique allows you to structure tasks and set aside time to complete them while allowing you the time to have regular breaks in your day.
To get you started here are the five basic steps to implementing Pomodoro technique:
  • Decide on the task to be done.
  • Set the pomodoro (timer) to 25 minutes.
  • Work on the task until the timer rings; record with an x.
  • Take a short break (3-5 minutes).
  • Every four "pomodori" take a longer break (15–30 minutes).

13. Sleep

One final tip is a little extreme and could probably only work for those of you with flexible working arrangements, but changing your sleep cycle could prove to be beneficial.
A short burst of intense work on priority topics very early in the morning followed by a short power nap before starting “normal” work can help make the working day less stressful and more productive as the most pressing issues are resolved early.

14. Want It Bad Enough

Ultimately, my top tip if you feel you are being unproductive is to take a step back and question your underlying thoughts about your job: through my own attempts to improve my output I realized I could only boost productivity (especially through ending procrastination) if I wanted “it” bad enough. I think the same is true for a great many procrastinators.
“It” could be anything, from marketing success, to great feedback from a client or boss, to a pay raise. However, if you don’t want "it" bad enough, you will continue to struggle with procrastination because there will always be a reason to put off knuckling down and getting on with work.
If this is the case, ignore online zealots who say "life is rubbish, stop whining and get on with it." Acknowledge that your unproductiveness is a big issue you should spend some time (downtime, not work time!) trying to deal with.
To reach your full potential, will you need to change your job or career? Are you genuinely doing something you want to be doing? What are the real mid- to long-term consequences going to be if you walk away from your role?
Answering these questions will help you realize what “it” is; the reward that will act as kryptonite to your procrastination.

The New iPad : Everything You Need To Know About

The latest to join the queue of the cool tablets flying on the market shelves is the new iPad that Apple rolled out a few months back. The new iPad, iPad3 or third generation iPad…call it by whichever name you wish to, it is undoubtedly one of the coolest gadgets that has become the choice of millions. This new tablet is an amazing and useful gadget for bloggers & we have already covered some of the best Blogging apps for iPad. Now, here is my hands on review of the New iPad after using it for months. I’m sure it will help you to make a decision on to buy it or not to buy.

Frankly, I love the latest gadgets and when it is from Apple, I just can’t resist and finally end up buying one. The latest entry in my gadget world is the new iPad.  Ask me to describe this new gadget in one word and I would say, ‘fabulous‘. I might sound crazy but frankly most share of my hard-earned money goes in buying the gadgets. Before buying the third generation iPad, I was using iPad2 from last 8 or 9 months. After using both the tablets I actually can easily distinguish between the two and share my viewpoint . Though, the new iPad is almost similar to iPad2 lookwise but it comes fully loaded with new features that make it one of the stylishly desirable tablets.
Here I am sharing the positive and negative aspects which I have figured out while using the new iPad that will surely help you to take a decision if you are planning to buy one.

Key features of the New iPad

Apple A5X (dual-core with quad-core graphics) processor that make it faster than iPad2 that has A5 processor.
One of the groundbreaking features of the new iPad is Retina Display with  2048 x 1536 pixels.
It has 4G LTE cellular technology that will allow you to browse internet and download files at superfast speed.
Mobile users will be excited to see the inclusion of 4G LTE cellular technology, which offers faster mobile downloads.
Another exciting feature that I like in new iPad is its 5 mega pixels/1080p rear camera which is a huge improvement over the iPad2 camera.
It is available with 16GB, 32GB, 64 storage capacity unlike iPad which is now only available in 16GB.
It is first tablet with Bluetooth 4.0 also known as Bluetooth Smart Ready which will help you in faster data transfer between devices.
10-hour battery life, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity, 1GB RAM,  1080p video recording at 30fps, , four and five-finger swipe gestures are the other notable features that enhance the overall user experience.
Adding feather to the cap Apple has announced the upgraded operating system – iOS6 that will bring cool features like Siri : Apple’s voice-activated personal assistant, FaceTime over cellular networks to the new iPad.

The new iPad Vs iPad 2 ?

How is the new iPad different from iPad2 is one question that you all might be curious about. Frankly, I was keenly interested in knowing how it  is different from iPad2 when its design is almost similar. No doubt, the new iPad is thicker and heavier than iPad2 but its features like amazing features make it stand apart from iPad2.
I was quite amazed when I started using new iPad for the first time because the text was razor sharp, colors were quite rich and everything was perfectly detailed because of retina display. Second thing that really blowed me away was its blazing speed while playing games and doing multitasking ; thanks to A5X chip with quad-core processor.

In addition, iOS6 update which is coming this fall will bring features like Siri and Facetime calling over cellular network promising to enhance the overall experience. These two upcoming features will only be available for the new iPad and iPhone 4S users.
Another feature that you might not be aware of is the amazing dictation feature which helps you to convert your words into text. Simply, tap the microphone icon on the keyboard, say what you want to type and it does the typing for you. It was exciting to learn about this cool feature and it was a fun moment to see my new iPad converting my words into text.  Though, if you are an existing iPad2 user and looking to sell it to upgrade your tab to iPad3, I suggest you to wait and stick to iPad2, unless you are complete gadget freak.

Cons of New iPad

It is slightly heavier and thicker than iPad2.
Its reflective screen doesn’t work well in outdoors.
There is no Flash support in the web browser.
The iPad misses out the standard USB port like its predecessors. Same goes for its non replaceable battery and memory card slot.
There is no GPS receiver in the Wi-Fi version
Personally, one thing that bothered me much is that the ‘oh so cool’ tablet becomes uncomfortably hot at times.
If you are interested in basic iOS apps like weather, stocks, clock, calculator, voice memos then you might get bugged up not finding them on your new iPad.
Is it worth buying third generation iPad?
I won’t deny that the new iPad became irresistible to me because I was overtaken by the hype and after using it for sometime I have concluded that it definitely has met my expectations. No matter how strongly we talk about bad side of the coin, fact remains that it is loaded with impressive features. As of now, the biggest USP of the new iPad is its magnificent Retina display but the promising features like Siri and Facetime over cellular networks are sure to make you love the new iPad.

Why should you buy the new iPad?

From my personal experience I am writing down the reason why you should buy it or who should buy it.
If you are the one who is more cautious about image quality between standard-definition and high-definition images then you should go for the new iPad. This is one reason I bought this cool gadget.
It has one of the fast processor with quad-core graphics that will let you enjoy the thrill and excitement of different games.

If speed matters to you a lot then this new tablet from Apple is an ideal choice. The new iPad is 4G enabled device that will offer browsing at amazing speed. Go for the one which works on either AT&T’s 4G network or Verizon’s 4G network for fast connection anywhere.
It is good for those who love to keep their music and video data stored. Unlike iPad2 that has 16GB storage capacity, the new Apple iPad is available in 16GB, 32GB or 64GB capacity. However, I preferred 16GB for the reason that I don’t have too much of music and video data.

Google Adsense is the best Pay Per Click ad network for the webmasters and the only revenue stream for some bloggers . Although , there are some alternatives but they can’t compete with Google Adsense because Google Adsense have higher Click Through Rates [ CTR ] with a lot of advertisers . But getting approved by Google Adsense is almost an impossible task for some bloggers . And when, you don’t have a Website of your own, it’s like impossible in most common scenerio.
Basic Adsense approval requirement:
A website with a standard domain of at least 6 months old .
Your website should not contain any illegal and pornographic content .
You should have a mature website with some useful content .
The content of your website should not be copied from other sources .
Adsense approval without Website trick:
And for the Indians , it is more difficult than the others . But , there is a way to get Adsense approval without website . Yeah , you heard it correctly . There is an Adsense revenue site named Indyarocks.com which offers easy sign up for Adsense without having a website . All you need to do is to sign up for Indyarocks and put some content in your account , and then request for an Adsense account . See below the requirements of Indyarocks to get an Adsense account :-

Your profile should be at least 50% complete .
Your account should have an image . [ Remember that you have to upload your own image ]
You should upload al least 10 images to your album and their privacy must be set to everyone .
You should post at least 2 blogs in your account .

I will advice you to request for an Adsense account when it becomes at least of 10 days old , although it is not an eligibility proposal of Indyrocks . Right after you meet all the requirements , you can request for an Adsense account . After your request , you will receive an email regarding confirmation . Then , confirm your request and complete the request form by visiting the form url which will come along with your email . Within 10 days you will receive an email regarding your account whether it is approved or not . And the most wonderful thing is that you don’t need to provide your website url during the sign up process . So , using this method , you can easily achieve an Adsense account without having any website . Not only you can get an Adsense account through Indyarocks but you can also earn some extra money in Indyarocks by implementing your Adsense account with Indyarocks , by uploading videos , by watching videos and by referring people to the site .

Why ‘The Atlantic’ No Longer Cares About SEO

SEO News

The number of online news consumers has grown consistently over the past half-decade, yet not every publication has gotten the same lift as The Atlantic, whose web audience has catapulted from approximately 500,000 to 13.4 million monthly visitors since taking down its paywall in early 2008.

As we’ve explored previously, there are many factors that have contributed to The Atlantic‘s online success: assigning a number of well-known columnists, like James Fallows and Andrew Sullivan (now of The Daily Beast), to begin writing original pieces for TheAtlantic.com; launching and staffing two new online news properties, TheAtlanticWire.com and TheAtlanticCities.com; and building up its digital ad offerings to support those hires.

Furthermore, The Atlantic is adapting its editorial strategy to the shifting landscape of online news consumption, namely, to capitalize on the growing importance of social networks, rather than search engines, as sources of traffic.

“Sixteen months ago we received the same number of monthly referrals from search as social. Now 40% of traffic comes from social media,” Scott Havens, senior vice president of finance and digital operations at The Atlantic Media Company, said in a phone conversation ahead of his on-stage interview at our Mashable Connect conference in Orlando, Fla. last weekend. “Truly [our writers] are not really thinking about SEO anymore. Now it’s about how we can spin a story so that it goes viral.”

SEE ALSO: Inside The Atlantic: How One Magazine Got Profitable by Going ‘Digital First’
Bob Cohn, who was recently promoted to editor of The Atlantic Digital, rejoices the change. “Before, it seemed Demand Media was going to own the Internet by assigning stories based on search returns. It was a cynical approach to journalism,” Cohn recalled. “We’re no longer writing to get the attention of Google algorithms. We’re writing to get you to share it, to digg it.”

Cohn says that writers author their own headlines, which are frequently rewritten by their channel editors and sometimes tweaked again by a homepage editor. Often, a headline that appears on Facebook or Twitter is different than the one that appears on the site.

I asked Cohn why he didn’t feed in a separate headline in the metadata. He said he and his team could, but it was no longer important enough to compensate for a boring headline, even in search results or on Google News.

And what kind of headlines do well? “A great headline is just a great headline,” says Cohn. “It has to be clear; it has to be intelligent. We’re not writing for machines. We’re writing for humans.”

5 Free and Easy Ways to Improve Your Business’s Google Ranking

Even if most small businesses don’t understand search engine optimization (SEO), that doesn’t mean they can’t be helped by it.  For those who don’t know SEO from their CEO, it is in essence a means of improving the ranking of your business in the Google search algorithm. This in turn, can help a business move up in Google’s search listing.

Sonam Lama, CEO of Achieve Visibility, a SEO site specializing in helping small- and medium-size businesses, says there are a few quick fixes that small businesses can take to help improve their Google rankings. The best part is they are free and simple.

Use WordPress

“WordPress is the most SEO-friendly blogging platform,” Lama said.  “It is also one of, if not the best, content management systems when it comes to SEO. Optimizing your site using WordPress, instead of the outdated website platforms which most local businesses use will help your optimization efforts.”

Keyword Research

“This is the foundation of SEO and increasing your ranking on Google and the major search engines,” Lama said. “Once you created or switched over your site to WordPress, you want to do some keyword research. Look for at least three relevant keywords you want to target.”

 Onsite Optimization

“Once you’ve identified those highly searched keywords, sprinkle them onto your site and spread them around in various places,” Lama said. “You don’t want to stuff them everywhere, though, since this will be considered ‘spamming’ by Google.”

Google Places

“After you have your website properly and effectively optimized for the search engines, you want to claim your Google Places business listing,” Lama said. “You do this adding basic information about your business and being as detailed as possible in each section. For example, give your complete phone number, address, business description, keywords, hours of operation, etc.  You can further improve rankings by adding photos and asking for reviews of your business.”

Back linking

“Finally, once you’ve optimized your Google places listing, you should be ranking within a few days to a week,” Lama said. “Those rankings occur within the local listings (the top portion of Google where you see the red tabs: A, B, C, D, etc.).”

The job, however, doesn’t end there.  According to Lama, businesses can also boost their ranking in the natural Google search results by back linking.

“My top methods of back linking for local business keywords range from social bookmarking to profile submissions on high page rank sites among several others,” Lama said. “Each of these methods will allow you to create a valuable link back to your site, which will increase its value and relevancy in the eyes Google.”

Top 10 SEO Tips

Please enjoy these award-winning Top 10 SEO Tips for webmasters and website owners. Too many people make the mistake of spending thousands of dollars on just Pay-Per-Click (Sponsored Ads) campaigns before they realize that most people click on the non-sponsored listings more than "Sponsored Ads". There are several hundred techniques to achieve higher ranking in the search results, but these Top 10 SEO Tips are in my opinion the most valuable and timeless. They are also current, as I'm making a point to update this list respective to changes in search engine algorthims.

The Top 10 SEO Tips contained in this tutorial were created after years of experimentation and practical application with hundreds of client websites, mostly with final results of achieving higher ranking within the first page of search engine results. We hope you find these SEO tips valuable. For an in-depth study of everything we know about search engine optimization, please visit our new Blog Marketing Toolkit website, download our free eBook, or give us a call.

SEO Tip #1: Find the Best Keywords

It would be a waste of your time to optimize your website for keywords that are not even being searched for. Even if you do get top placement for a broad keyword that isn't what most users are looking for, Google will calculate the number of times users did not select your listing, and the number of times they returned to the search results to choose a different website. Trying to beat this calculation is futile and more often then not, just a huge waste of time and energy.

Therefore you should invest some resources into finding the best keywords; those that turn searches into purchases or leads. Buying Sponsored Ads and paying for high end design and usuability is best place to start. However, there are several SEO tools and SEO software available on the Internet to help you find the best keywords; most of which are offered by the search engines themselves and are completely free.

Here is a core principle of the Top 10 SEO Tips: When using any SEO tool for doing keyword research, start by keeping your searches ambiguous, creating categories, and drilling down to create small clusters (or silos) of keywords. The results will always return new suggestions and ideas, sometimes surprising ones that you may not have thought of. In the Sponsored Ads, these clusters become your ad groups. With your SEO, they become the directories (or taxonomy) of the content you'll want to have on your website.

Behavioral-targeting and using Long Tail Keywords are an excellent way to get higher ranking quickly for keywords that generate sales, and will have longevity to them in the search results. Poor keyword examples would be: kindle, nike shoes, roommate new york. Here are some examples of keywords that are ideal for SEO:

Buy Used Amazon Kindle Online
Nike Shoes Kobe Mens Size 10
Find a Roommate in NYC

SEO Tip #2: Discover What Your Competitors are Doing

It's a fact and one of my Top 10 SEO Tips, that search engines analyze incoming links to your website as part of their ranking criteria. Knowing how many incoming links your competitors have, will give you a fantastic edge. Of course, you still have to discover your competitors before you can analyze them.

Your analysis of competitors should include these extremely important linking criteria (super SEO tips), such as:

Competitor rank in the search engines
Quantity AND quality of incoming links (prioritized)
What keywords are in the title of linking page?
% of links containing specific keywords in the link text
The Google PageRank™ or MozRank of linking pages
The popularity of the linking domain and the linking page (measured by links & mentions)
Aside from using some of the awesome SEO software mentioned on this website, here are some things I personally do when researching a competitor:

Click the link to their Site Map page and see what keyword you find in the links
Get a savvy web person to find and parse their XML Site Map to find keywords in page names
View the HTML title and meta tags of your top competitors to compile a list of needed content

SEO Tip #3: Write Very Linkable & Sharable Content

An article is not a sexy thing to look at here in today's online marketing world. Generic content can't be slapped together and thrown online with the hope that it will get high ranking for the life of that page of content. Think about the book the Long Tail that I linked to above. I do because the content was meanful and useful to me in my career as an SEO Expert. The content could have these attributes if it has any hope of earning and sustaining higher ranking in the search engine results (many of these came directly from Google):

The content is useful
The content is original
You can't help but link to it
There are supportive facts and references
There's enough detail that nobody can memorize it

SEO Tip #4: Optimize Your Title and Meta Tags

HTML titles and meta tags should be different on every page of your website if you wish for most search engines to store and list them in the search results. Us SEO Expert's have experimented with these two pieces of code to help us reach an accepted conclusion about how best to use them and what happens when you optimize them.

The meta "keywords" tag won't be discussed in to much detail here, since Google has announced that they do not use the meta keywords tag in their ranking criteria. Because Google has 64 percent market share in search, that should be enough to convince you to not spend a lot of time on this attribute.

Optimizing Your Homepage Title

There are different theories about how long your homepage title should be. Since Google only displays the first 66 or so characters (with spaces), my Top 10 SEO tips for the title on anything other than the homepage would be to keep the title under 66 characters and relevant to the content on the page. However, some (including myself) argue that the value of the homepage title may warrant additional search term inclusion. Let's take a look at Amazon and Ebay homepage titles:

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more
Local SEO Services, Local Search Engine Optimization, Mobile Search, Online Advertising for Local Businesses | LocalSplash.com
Buy.com - Computers, Electronics, Digital Cameras, Books, DVDs, Music, Games, Software, Toys, Sports

Optimizing Your Homepage Meta Description

Same best practice applies here. Get those top terms into a description that isn't spammy and is a clear indicator of what your website is about. Below are the meta descriptions from eBay and Amazon.

Buy and sell electronics, cars, clothing, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods, digital cameras, and everything else on eBay, the world's online marketplace. Sign up and begin to buy and sell - auction or buy it now - almost anything on eBay.com.
Online shopping from the earth's biggest selection of books, magazines, music, DVDs, videos, electronics, computers, software, apparel & accessories, shoes, jewelry, tools & hardware, housewares, furniture, sporting goods, beauty & personal care, broadband & dsl, gourmet food & just about anything else.
The rule of thumb here is to get your most important keywords into your homepage title and meta description.

Optimizing Subpage Titles and Meta Tags

Let's take a break for a moment and discuss Click-Through Rate (CTR) and Bounce Rate. When you perform a search in a search engine, what shows up in your web browser is called an impression. When you make a selection, that selection is called a click. Google and other search engines record each impression and each click to help them understand which listings are being clicked on the most. They also record patterns (so stop thinking about getting all your friends to search for and click your listing). If the majority of normal search volume selects your listing, you'll have a higher CTR and higher ranking; same applies for Sponsored Ads by the way.

That being said, if a healthy percentage of searchers return to Google's search results (called a Bounce) and select a different listing, your CTR value will be reduced and ultimately so will your ranking.

To get and stay at the top of the search results, you need to be the most attractive listing in the search result, and you need to provide enough content to prevent the searcher from leaving your website to find a different listing.

This one SEO tip could make or break your SEO campaign. Click-Through Rate (CTR) plays an instrumental role in how relevant Google thinks your website is. By compelling users to click with clear call-to-actions (buy, order, download, beat, fix, etc) and by using value propositions (guaranteed, on sale now, etc), one can improve their CTR and search engine ranking. Oh, don't forget to squeeze your keywords in there as well.

If you ever forget this SEO tip, just perform a search in Google for "title tag principles", where you'll find my listing invoking these principles. Told ya I was good at this stuff, didn't I?

Here's some sample syntax:

<title>Call to Action, Keywords, & Value Proposition (under 66 characters)</title>

<meta name="description" content="Differently worded call to action, keywords, & value proposition (under 160 characters)" />

<meta name="keywords" content="one to five keywords separated by commas" />

SEO Tip #5: Optimizing Your Headings and Subheadings

In college and some high schools, essays are written using a standard guideline created by the Modern Language Association (MLA). These guidelines included how to write you cover page, title, paragraphs, how to cite references, etc. On the Web, we follow the W3C's guidelines as well as commonly accepted "best practices" for organizing a web page (page structure).

Headings play an important role in organizing information, so be sure to include ONLY ONE H1 tag when assembling your page, and optionally using one or more subheading (H2-H6). Using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), I was able to make my h1 at the top of this page more appealing. Here's a piece of code you can pop into your heading:

<style type="text/css">
      h1 font-size: 18px;
      h2 font-size: 16px;
      h3 font-size: 14px;
</style>

Since a page full of headings would look just plain silly, my SEO tip would be to fill in the blank space with paragraphs, ordered and unordered lists, images, and other content. Try to get at least 400+ words on each page.

SEO Tip #6: Use Title and ALT Attributes

Using the title attribute is a direct method of telling the search engines and the user more information about where a link will take them if they click through it. It's also a W3C standard for making your page accessible to those who are visually impared. In other words, blind folks can navigate through your website using a special browser that reads title and ALT attributes. Sample syntax might be:

<a href="http://www.top10seotips.com/seo_software.htm" title="SEO Software to Help You Get Higher Search Engine Ranking">SEO Software</a>

The ALT Attribute is used for the same reasons as the title attribute, but is specifically for describing an image to the search engine and to the visually impared. Here's how you might use ALT attribute in an image tag:

<img src="http://www.top10seotips.com/images/logo-top10seotips.jpg" alt="Top 10 SEO Tips - Search Engine Marketing Tips and SEO Software Featured by SEO Expert Steve Wiideman">

SEO Tip #7: Optimizing File Nomenclatures

Whenever possible, you should save your images, media, and web pages with the keywords in the file names. For example, if your keyword phrase is "golf putters" you'll want to save the images used on that page as golf-putters-01.jpg or golf_putters_01.jpg (either will work). It's not confirmed, but many SEO's have experienced improvement in ranking by renaming images and media. You also may receive visits from Google Images and other media search queries.

More important is your web page's filename, since many search engines now allow users to query using "inurl:" searches. For fun, try this query in Google (copy/paste): "ebook site:.com filetype:pdf". You'll find all you can eat eBooks (you're welcome).

Your filename for the golf putters page could be golf-putters.html or golf_putters.html. Anytime there is an opportunity to display or present content, do your best to insure the content has the keywords in the filename (as well as a Title or ALT attribute).

You may need to contact your IT department or webmaster to rewrite your page URLs if your website platform is non-accommodating to custom URL nomenclature.

SEO Tip #8: Tell the Search Engines What to Index

I may take a lot of heat from the other SEO's out there for this one, especially because Google and other search engines have already helped reduce the amount of duplicate content indexed. However, I do enough search queries that begin with "site:" to know that duplicate content is still a major issue. Worse, I see a lot of files showing up in the indexes that should be hidden from the world (case in study: all the free PDF's you're probably still downloading from SEO Tip #7).

Optimizing Your robots.txt File

By far the easiest top 10 SEO tips you will ever do as it relates to search engine optimization is include a robots.txt file at the root of your website. Open up a text editor, such as Notepad and type "User-agent: *". Then save the file as robots.txt and upload it to your root directory on your domain. This one command will tell any spider that hits your website to "please feel free to crawl every page of my website".

Hopefully, you've already moved all the excessive JavaScripts and CSS styles into their own folders on your website to reduce the filesize and load time of the pages on your website. If you have, adding a simple "Disallow: /js/" to a file called the robots.txt will tell the crawlers not to bother with files in the JS folder and to only focus on your content, as opposed to non-important source code. Here's an example of the robots.txt file from this website:

Redirecting Duplicate Content

For consistency, it's better to have one version of each page to get all the inbound links and earn all of the points with the search engines. This means telling Google and Bing (in their respective Webmaster Tools) to only index the www.-version of your website (or the non-www version if you're "one of those types of people"). You can also use your Windows Server or a file called the .htaccess file on your Apache server to permanently redirect one version to the other.

Next, add a new tag to every page of your website to prevent other versions of the page from appearing in the search results. Just think about all the different ways we display content. There are often "Print View", "Flash Version", and pages with reviews, ratings and comments that append page URLs with strings such as &rating=5, &view=print, etc. To correct this issue, we add a Canonical Tag to every page of the website. Here's the syntax:

<link rel="canonical" href="http://www.top10seotips.com/seo_tips.htm" />

Finally, you should round up all those domains you bought and make sure they are pointing to your one main website with a 301 Permanent Redirect. Bruce Clay created a way to this efficiently which he called an IP Funnel. I've been the victim of this so many times being an SEO Expert. More than once, I've found myself scratching my head trying to figure out why a website would not get Google PageRank™, only to find out later than an older domain held by the client had been displaying the same content and had been the one Google gave the credit to.

SEO Tip #9: Feed Search Engines Static and XML Site Maps

Optimizing Your Static Site Map

PageRank is relative and shared throughout a website by a unique voting system created by Google. I could spend two days trying to explain how PageRank™ works, but what it comes down to is having efficient navigation throughout your site. That where a site map page comes in. Since every page on the website will be linked to the site map, it allows webcrawlers (and users) to quickly and easily find content. This SEO tip is one of my favorite of top 10 SEO tips.

It used to take 4 clicks to get to a product page at www.questinc.com. By creating a site map, users and search engines can now access any page on the site with only two clicks. The PageRank from these deep pages went from 0 to 2 in about 3 months and the ranking went from virtually not existent to #1 almost across the board for nearly 2,000 pages on their site.

Feel free to search Google for any of the terms on this catalog page, such as MITSUBISHI Monitor Repair. See how powerful a static site map can truly be.

Using XML Site Maps

Though you may feel like it is impossible to get listed high in Google's search engine result page, believe it or not that isn't Google's intention. They simply want to insure that their viewers get the most relevant results possible. In fact, they've even created a program just for webmasters to help insure that your pages get cached in their index as quickly as possible. They call the program Google Sitemaps. In this tool, you'll also find a great new linking tool to help discover who is linking to your website.

For Google, these two pieces in the top 10 SEO tips would be to read the tutorial entitled How Do I Create a Sitemap File and to create your own. To view the one on this page, website simply right-click this SEO Tips Sitemap.xml file and save it to your desktop. Open the file with a text editor such as Notepad.

Effective 11/06, Google, Yahoo!, and Bing will be using one standard for site maps. Below is a snippet of the standard code as listed at Sitemaps.org. Optional fields are lastmod, changefreq, and priority.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">

   <url>

      <loc>http://www.example.com/</loc>

      <lastmod>2005-01-01</lastmod>

      <changefreq>monthly</changefreq>

      <priority>0.8</priority>

   </url>

</urlset>

SEO Tip #10: Use Checklists and Validators

There are several ways to validate the accuracy of your website's source code. The four most important, in my opinion, are validating your search engine optimization, HTML, CSS and insuring that you have no broken links or images.

Start by analyzing broken links. One of the W3C's Top 10 SEO Tips would be for you to use their tool to validate links. If you have a lot of links on your website, this could take awhile, so I recommend trying Xenu's Link Sleuth, which you can find on our SEO Software page.

Next, revisit the W3C to analyze HTML and CSS. Here is a link to the W3C's HTML Validation Tool and to their CSS Validation Tool. A new, unbelievable tool just came out that does much better than some of these older ones, and that is the Qualidator Site Analyzer tool, which you can also find listed in our SEO Software page.

The final step in the last of my Top 10 SEO Tips is to validate your search engine optimization. Without having to purchase software, the best online tool I know of for this (now) is my own SEO Audit List, which contains website-level SEO validation, webpage-level SEO structure and keyword optimization, and off-page SEO strategies you should have in your arsenal. You can also use WebsiteGrader.com and other online tools. However, they aren't as inclusive (yet) as my Audit Checklist.

Tips To Get More Traffic To Your Blog

You have finally decided to create your blog. You set up your hosting and you bought that URL you have always wanted for your site. You have thought about your niche and you finally publish your first article.

You get all excited but after some time passes, you notice that there is no one going to your site and no one leaving any comments (or if there is, it’s very minimal). It is every new blogger’s dream to get traffic to their site, but getting the traffic you want might be a bit tricky.

When I started out with my personal site, I was a bit frustrated at first, but did not lose heart. I worked on it and found some extremely helpful solutions to getting traffic and loyal readers to my site. I intend to share with you here what I did and hope that you find these tips useful for your own site as well. There are several ways to get traffic to your site, some may be costly and others are free.

Tip #1 – Offer informative and useful content

You might say that you have heard or read about this before, but I cannot stress enough the need to have the best content you can offer your readers. Share or offer original and varied content. Share information that will help others with real solutions, ones that are tried and tested by you, the author of the article.

Keep the articles fresh as well.  I am guilty of not being able to write a lot of new articles on my personal blog, and I’ve learned that traffic decreases when that happens. So I have vowed to myself that I will certainly write at least one new article each week. The number of articles you publish will depend on your time and your energy. I will not recommend you to write or put up articles that are half baked. Quality is always more important than quantity.  Image Source

Tip #2 – Boost your search engine ranking

You can boost your search engine ranking by focusing your content on keywords related to your topic. This is also calledSearch Engine Optimization. This will allow your website or blog to be searchable via the web. Use words that come naturally to people of all ages when looking for your type of site.

To guide you, please note that your keywords should not be focused on just your title and pages only, but also on “meta-tags.” Meta tags are software codes that search engines see. Please make sure that you do not over do the keywords though. No matter how great your article is, if it not searchable then people will not be able to get the chance to read your masterpiece. Tip #3 - Promote your blog or website

Just like in anything we do, when we want to be heard, we need to shout out and make sure to promote ourselves. The best way to get traffic is by promoting your blog or website. There are so many ways you can promote yourself. You can hold a contest or announce a giveaway, but make sure that the contest rules or mechanics are skewed to your reader’s interest.

Another way to promote your blog is via social networking platforms like FaceBook and Twitter. You can share your links on the sites, just remember the golden rule:  Do not spam – share it once or twice in a day for Twitter and do not tag people on FaceBook that often, you might just end up annoying people rather than getting them interested in reading your articles. Tip #4- Be an active participant in blogging communities

Another good way for increasing traffic to your site is by actively participating in other blogging communities by doing the following activities:

1. Give constructive and useful comments on other blogs – When people see that you have useful things to share, then the chance of them going to your site to read more about you is higher.

2. Be willing to write guest posts – Writing guest posts will allow you to reach more people, especially if the site has a large following already. Just make sure that the topic is not far from your own niche.  Image Source

Tip #5 – Do the obvious

We sometimes overlook the obvious, but there are simple things that we can do to bring people to our site. One great way is to add your site’s url on your email signature. Most emails, even the free ones, offer a signature file. Usually this feature is found under the heading of “options” in the email program. One note: Be sure to include the “http://” before the Web address so a link will be created for people who receive plain text emails as well as html.

Another way is to include your site’s url on your business cards. Simple, yes, but it will get the word out that you have a site that they can go to. Be creative and share a statement under your site’s url, make it something catchy. Last but not least, the most obvious thing you can do is tell others about it.  I don’t think it would hurt sharing with your friends and coworkers that you have a blog that can help them with information they need!

Writing and maintaining a blog is no easy task. You put your heart and soul into writing the articles in hopes of being able to share your ideas and opinions to the masses. Doing the simple and yet important actions mentioned above to bring traffic to your site will definitely make it all worth your while. If you have other suggestions, please feel free to share them with us and to our readers.

3 Ways to Boost Your Site’s Page Rank on Google

Raising your site’s page rank is one way to get a better rank by the search engines. This shows Google and the rest of the world that your site has real value. As your page rank increases, you’ll find that you get more search engine traffic and therefore more customers. By using the strategies we’ll be outlining below, you’ll be able to boost your site’s page rank and get more traffic. You will find new products being launched all the time such as Rapid Free Traffic Review which will take advantage of Web design.

1. Do you ever notice that another site ranks better than you in Google for your main keyword, and you can’t figure out why? What the search engines value most of all when it comes to ranking your site is valuable, original content. In order to promote your site and improve your page rank, you have to give the search engines the kind of content they like. If you want Google to value your site and give it high preference, then start focusing on the quality of your content. Publishing good content will also cause other blogs and sites on topics similar to yours to link back to your site. This will give you relevant backlinks that will also help you to get a higher page rank. It’s not that hard to increase your page rank when you remember the importance of creating quality content.

2. You can submit your blog to special directories because they are search engine friendly and have a high page rank due to the fact that they have lots of incoming links. Try to find directories that are “do follow” so that you can submit your link and increase your page rank with their help. Even though you won’t have to pay anything with most of these directories, sometimes there is a small fee which is worth the money. You can easily find these blog directories by searching on Google. If you like Web design it’s easy to realize that many new launches such as Rapid Free Traffic Review benfit greatly from this style of marketing.

3. Aside from getting as many backlinks as you can, you also have to focus on internal links to raise your page rank. Search engines like to see internal linking, where you have one article on your site linking to another, and this helps your page rank. The more internal links you have on your site, the easier it is for visitors to navigate around it.

Through this article we can determine that increasing page rank is easy and only requires consistent work. As time progresses, you will keep finding ways to get high quality incoming links that will increase page rank and offer you the push you need. If you don’t see results immediately, you shouldn’t be tempted to quite because it usually takes some time before you see your PR go up, however, you will eventually see some progress.
